Artist Specific iPhone Apps
The iPhone is the premiere mobile platform for music fans because of how seamlessly it works with iTunes, its location based services, and its many great, terrestrial radio-killing music apps. Lil Wayne, Pink, Death Cab for Cutie all have custom iPhone apps where fans can access news, media, and tour dates of their respective artists.
At first these apps really underwhelmed me, but then I realized the HUGE potential of these apps…
If every artist could create these applications, free of charge, and with the same ease of setting up a myspace page, you have one more easy avenue to connect with fans. And if it were easy, free, and reliable, every band out there would make one in the same way they used to “have to have a myspace page”. Another, perhaps easier way is to just start making band websites look mobile friendly and act like an app in the browser window, the problem would be the lack of a compelling location based service, at which point an app would be the way to do it.
Either way, I get excited thinking about the prospect of an artist having an iPhone app just as casually as I do thinking they have a social network profile.
